Virtualize This: USB over Ethernet

November 10th, 2008 by Paul Sterley | No Comments | Filed in ESXi, Virtualization

In the virtualization world, one really big pain in the neck is the fact that ESXi currently does not support USB devices such as security dongles, printers, etc.

Well, there is a solution. Digi is well known for creating connectivity products. I’ve worked with their stuff as far back as Windows NT 4, with serial/parallel connectivity.

Its Hardware + Software. You have to install a software driver on your windows machine that speaks USB-over-IP. That driver makes devices on the local network appear as if they were physically attached USB devices.
